PlayStation 6 Release date, India price and every rumour, rated
Every PS6 claim worth knowing, rated for how sure anyone can be and traced to a dated,
archived source — separated from the four things Sony has actually said.
Sony has not announced the PlayStation 6. No name, no date, no price, no
specification. What it has said is narrower and more useful: its CEO says neither a launch
date nor a price has been decided, memory will stay very expensive through Sony’s fiscal 2027,
and new PlayStation games stop shipping on disc from January 2028. Mark Cerny has also shown the
graphics technology Sony and AMD are building for “a future console”.
Everything else is leaks — mostly from two sources, KeplerL2 and Moore’s Law Is Dead, both
working from AMD material. They agree on the broad shape: an AMD chip with Zen 6 and RDNA 5, roughly
triple the base PS5’s graphics performance, a handheld alongside it, and support for PS4 and PS5
games. Where they collide with reporting is the date. The leaks say holiday 2027; Bloomberg says Sony
is weighing 2028 or 2029.
Each claim below carries a confidence rating, the source’s own words, the date it was said and
an archived copy, so you can check it without trusting me. I have also made three predictions of my
own — launch year, India price and the disc drive — which will be scored here, right or wrong,
when Sony announces the real thing.

Grouped by topic, strongest evidence first within each. The quote under every claim is the
source’s exact wording, stored when this tracker was written, so it survives if the original is
edited or deleted. “Confirmed” here means Sony said it on the record — nothing else
earns that rating.

Official launch date
Confirmed
None. Sony says it has not fixed a date.
This is the most recent thing Sony itself has said. Any page quoting an exact PS6 release date is quoting a leak, not Sony.
He confirmed the ongoing delay during an interview with the Wall Street Journal, in which journalist Jason Douglas writes: "Totoki said the company still hasn't fixed a date for PS6's launch."

Holiday 2027 launch
Mixed
The PS6 is still on track for holiday 2027.
KeplerL2 has a long record on AMD console hardware, but this directly contradicts the Bloomberg report below. Both cannot be right, which is why it is rated mixed.
Both Xbox and PS6 are still on track for Holiday 2027.
Sony is considering pushing the PS6 to 2028 or even 2029 because of the memory shortage.
"Considering" is not "decided" — but Sony's own later statements about memory costs (see Price) are consistent with it. Neither Sony nor Nintendo commented.
Citing sources familiar with Sony's strategic thinking, the article claims that "Sony Group Corp is now considering pushing back the debut of its next PlayStation console to 2028 or even 2029".
The PS6 chip design was complete by early 2025, with test silicon due by the end of that year.
Sony has historically launched about two years after a chip is finished, which is where the late-2027 expectation comes from. It says when the console could launch, not when Sony will choose to.
According to KeplerL2, the chipset design for the PS6 is complete and the company will start producing it for testing by the end of this year.
Sony has not set a price, and expects memory to stay very expensive through its fiscal 2027.
Sony's fiscal 2027 runs April 2027 to March 2028 — exactly the window the holiday-2027 leaks point at. This is the single strongest reason to doubt a 2027 launch.
"We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices," Totoki said, via Sony's translator. "So we would like to really observe and follow the situation. "Looking at the current circumstances, the memory price is also expected to be very high FY 2027, because there will still be a shortage of supply. So under that assumption, we must think carefully what we will do."
About $760 to build; $699 possible if Sony subsidises it.
An estimate of parts cost, not a leaked price, and made before Sony said memory would stay expensive. Treat $699 as a floor rather than a forecast. The India conversion is worked through in my price call below.
"My current BOM (bill of materials) estimate for PS6 is ~$760, so I would say $699 is still possible with a reasonable subsidy. The question is if Sony will even bother now that Xbox is not direct competition anymore."
AMD Zen 6 CPU and an RDNA 5 GPU with 40 to 48 compute units above 3 GHz, at about 160 W.
One source, describing a 2023 AMD presentation. Even reports of this same leak disagree on the compute-unit count, so read the numbers as a direction, not a spec sheet.
The iGPU is allegedly based on the RDNA 5 GPU architecture with 40-48 Compute Units and a 3 GHz+ boost clock. [...] Moreover, MLID reports that the Orion APU has a TBP of 160 W.

Memory
Weak
GDDR7 at 32 GT/s on a 160- or 192-bit bus.
GDDR7 is the same memory type whose price Sony is worried about. How much of it the PS6 carries is the biggest single swing in its cost.
For memory, MLID claims a 160 or 192-bit wide memory bus and 32 GT/s of GDDR7 VRAM.

Performance against the PS5
Weak
About three times the PS5's rasterisation performance, with a bigger jump in ray tracing.
Against the base PS5, not the PS5 Pro, so the step up for a Pro owner is smaller. A projection from a design document, not a benchmark.
Even though the PS6's Orion APU is said to have a lower TPD than the base PS5, MLID alleges that the PS6 is expected to offer 3x the rasterization performance of the base PS5. Ray tracing performance is expected to have an even bigger improvement.

Project Amethyst
Confirmed
Sony and AMD are co-developing three graphics technologies — Neural Arrays, Radiance Cores and Universal Compression — for "a future console".
The only PS6-adjacent hardware Sony has shown on the record. What is confirmed is the technology and the "future console"; that it means the PS6 is a reasonable reading, not a statement.
"Overall, of course, it's still very early days for these technologies," Cerny said. "They only exist in simulation right now, but the results are quite promising and I'm really excited about bringing them to a future console in a few years' time."

A PlayStation handheld
Strong
A handheld launches alongside the PS6.
Rated strong because two leakers with separate track records describe the same device — Moore's Law Is Dead independently reported it as "Canis" in August 2025. Sony has said nothing.
Interestingly, KeplerL2 also said the rumored PS6 handheld is also on track to be released at the same time.
Codenamed "Canis", the handheld can be docked and played on a TV, possibly faster when docked.
If true, this is a different product from the PlayStation Portal, which only streams from a PS5 in the same house.
Codenamed Canis, the device will apparently be dockable — much like Nintendo's Switch and Switch 2 consoles. In other words, if this is to be believed, the PS6 handheld can be docked and connected to an external TV or monitor, and may even offer better performance while docked.

The handheld's chip
Weak
Four Zen 6C cores plus two low-power cores, and 16 RDNA 5 compute units on a 192-bit LPDDR5X bus.
HotHardware's own estimate is that this would trail the PS5 only slightly in raw graphics — a portable that plays PS5-class games, if the numbers hold.
Canis will purportedly include four Zen 6C dense cores, and then two Zen 6 LP cores specifically for the Sony operating system. Along with those CPUs, it will apparently also include 16 RDNA 5 compute units, fed by a 192-bit LPDDR5X memory bus.

No disc drive
Weak
The PS6 costing assumes a 1 TB Gen 5 SSD and no disc drive.
Strictly, this is the configuration the leaker costed, not a leaked spec. Sony ending disc production (see below) makes it far more likely to be the real one.
When asked if this included a 1 TB or 2 TB SSD, they responded, "1TB Gen 5 SSD and no disk drive."
From January 2028, Sony stops making discs for new PlayStation games. Existing discs are unaffected.
Not a PS6 announcement, but it decides what a PS6 is: if it launches in 2028, every new game for it is a download. Sony's CFO reaffirmed the date on the July 2026 earnings call despite the backlash.
Sony has announced plans to end production of physical discs for new games starting in January 2028. Following that date, new PlayStation games will only be available to purchase digitally on the PlayStation Store and at retailers.

Plays PS4 and PS5 games
Weak
Both the PS6 and the handheld run PS4 and PS5 games.
One source and a document described as years old — but the PS5 plays almost every PS4 game, so this is the outcome to expect even without the leak. It matters most if you are deciding whether a PS5 library carries over.
According to the podcast episode from 14 April, the leaked document explicitly states 'back compat PS4, PS5' in reference to the PlayStation 6's capabilities.
If you want to play this year, buy a PS5 — just not at today’s Digital Edition price.
Even the most optimistic credible PS6 date is more than a year away, the leaks say your PS5 library
will carry over, and a launch-year PS6 is unlikely to cost less in India than a PS5 does today.
The catch is the price, not the timing. We record Amazon.in prices daily, and the Digital Edition
jumped sharply on 12 October, partway through the Great Indian Festival — the card below shows by
how much. A price that held for over two months and moved overnight is worth waiting out, and the
live strip under each card will show when it falls back. If you are buying the disc model, buy it
for the discs you already own: new games stop shipping on disc in January 2028. The PS5 Pro and the
PlayStation Portal had no live offer on Amazon.in when this was checked, so neither is listed.
₹15,000 dearer than the ₹49,990 it held every day from 5 Aug 2026 to 11 Oct 2026
We cannot tell from the listing whether the rise is Sony's or the seller's, and found no Sony India announcement behind it. Wait for it to come back down.
Sony stops pressing discs for new games in January 2028, so this only earns its price on games you already own.
Prices checked 19 Oct 2026 against Amazon.in; the strip under each card is live. Daily price record kept since 25 Jul 2026.
04 On the record, before Sony announces
My three calls, and how you can check them
The claims above are what other people said. These are what I say, kept separate on purpose:
repeating a leak and then scoring myself on it would be marking my own homework. Each call is
falsifiable and names what it will be scored against. When Sony announces the PS6 I will write down
what happened next to what I said — including the ones I get wrong.
Call 1
When the PS6 goes on sale
Not yet scored
The PS6 home console first goes on sale — anywhere in the world — in calendar 2028. Not in 2027, and not in 2029.
How it is measured: A Nopturnia estimate, logged on 19 October 2026. The leaks point to holiday 2027 and I am betting against them, for one reason: Sony's own CEO said in May 2026 that memory will stay very expensive through its fiscal 2027 (April 2027 to March 2028) and that the company 'must think carefully' under that assumption. A console is mostly memory and silicon, and launching into the most expensive memory year Sony itself has forecast is the thing that statement argues against. Bloomberg's February report that Sony is weighing 2028 or 2029 points the same way. I chose 2028 over 2029 because Mark Cerny described the Project Amethyst technology in October 2025 as arriving 'in a few years' time', and three years from that is 2028.
Scored against: The first retail on-sale date of the PS6 home console in any country, as announced by Sony. A handheld or any other model does not count.
Call 2
What the cheapest PS6 costs in India
Not yet scored
The cheapest PS6 home console will launch in India at between ₹69,990 and ₹89,990, inclusive.
How it is measured: A Nopturnia estimate with its method shown. Step 1, the exchange Sony actually uses: the PS5 launched in India at ₹49,990 against $499.99 in the US — about ₹100 per dollar. Today the disc-drive PS5 Slim is ₹69,985 on Amazon.in against $650 in the US — about ₹108 per dollar. Step 2, the US price: the most specific estimate on record is a leaker's ~$760 bill of materials, with $699 possible "with a reasonable subsidy". Step 3: $699 at ₹100 is about ₹69,900; $799 (no subsidy) at ₹108 is about ₹86,300. Sony India prices end in 9,990, so the band is ₹69,990 to ₹89,990. If memory prices push the US price past $800, this call misses, and I would rather it miss than widen it until it cannot.
Scored against: Sony India's announced launch MRP for the cheapest PS6 home-console model. A handheld does not count.
Call 3
Whether the PS6 has a disc drive
Not yet scored
No PS6 home-console model sold at launch will have a built-in disc drive. A detachable add-on drive, like the PS5 Slim's, does not count against the call.
How it is measured: A Nopturnia estimate, logged on 19 October 2026. Three things point the same way: one leaker's cost estimate specifies "no disk drive"; the PS5 Pro already shipped without one; and Sony has announced that it stops making discs for new games from January 2028. A 2028 console with a built-in drive would be spending money on hardware that only plays the back catalogue.
Scored against: Sony's official specification for every PS6 home-console model available on launch day.
05 Our method
How the ratings work
Confirmed means Sony, or someone speaking for it on the record, said it.
Strong means two or more sources with separate track records describe the same
thing. Mixed means credible sources directly contradict each other — which is
why both launch-window claims carry it. Weak means one source, however good its
record. Most of the PS6 rumour mill is weak by that rule, because most of it traces back to a single
leaker reading a single document.
No claim goes on this page without a source that was actually opened and read, the exact words
quoted from it, the date it was said and an archived copy. I link to the outlet that reported a leak
as well as naming the leaker, because the outlet is what you can open and check. Leakers’ posts
are never embedded: an embed disappears when the post is deleted, and the deleted ones are the ones
that matter most.
When Sony announces the PS6, every claim here gets a verdict — right,
missed, or unfalsifiable when it is neither confirmed nor ruled out.
Unfalsifiable claims are counted separately rather than forced into a score, because forcing them
would make every leaker’s hit rate meaningless.
06 Questions
Frequently asked
Sony has not announced a date — its CEO told the Wall Street Journal in August 2026 that none has been fixed. Leakers point to holiday 2027, while Bloomberg reported in February 2026 that Sony is weighing 2028 or 2029 because of the memory shortage. My own call is 2028.
Nobody knows yet, and Sony says it has not decided. The most specific estimate is a leaker's ~$760 parts cost, with $699 possible if Sony subsidises it. Converting at the rate Sony has actually charged Indian buyers, my call for the cheapest model is ₹69,990 to ₹89,990. The method is shown in full in the calls section.
If you want to play now, buy a PS5 — even the earliest credible PS6 date is more than a year away, and the leaks say PS5 games will carry over. But do not buy the Digital Edition at today's Amazon.in price: it sat ₹15,000 lower every day from August until 12 October. The live price strip under each card above will show when it moves.
Sony has not said. One leak, based on an older internal document, says both the PS6 and the rumoured handheld run PS4 and PS5 games. Given that the PS5 plays almost all PS4 games, it is the likely outcome — but it is rated weak until Sony confirms it.
Probably not built in. Sony stops producing discs for new games from January 2028, and the most detailed cost estimate assumes no drive. My call is that no PS6 model at launch has one built in; a detachable add-on like the PS5 Slim's would not count against it.
