Advanced options

A long receipt forced onto A4 ends up as a thin strip with wide white margins, so Automatic keeps its own shape.

Small keeps a black-and-white page around 50 KB. Higher settings are sharper and several times larger.

    Step by step

How to scan a document to PDF with your phone

Four steps, no app to install and no account — and a result that looks like it came out of a photocopier, not a camera.

    Photograph the page

Press Scan with camera and your phone’s own camera opens. Put the bill on a table darker than the paper, keep the whole page in the frame, and take the photo. On a computer, press Choose photos or drop pictures onto the box.

    Check the edges

The page is found, cropped and straightened automatically. If it picked the wrong rectangle, tap the page and drag the four corners onto the paper. A magnifier appears under your finger so you can be exact.

    Add more pages

Press Add page for the next one. Pages can be moved, turned and deleted. Pick a look — Photocopy for the classic black-and-white scan, Clean colour when a stamp or signature matters.

Make the PDF and share it

Press Make PDF. The text on every page is read so the PDF is searchable, then Share PDF opens your phone’s share sheet — WhatsApp, Gmail, Drive — with the file attached.

    Private by design

Why this scanner can’t leak your bills

The things people scan are the things they least want copied: bank letters, medical bills, rent agreements, ID cards. Most scanner apps want an account and offer to “back up” every page to their cloud; most scanner websites upload the photo to process it. This one does neither, and you can check that yourself.

    Zero uploads

Finding the page, straightening it, cleaning it up and reading its text all happen in your browser, on your phone. Your photos and the PDF never enter a network request, so there is no copy anywhere for us to keep, lose or be asked to hand over.

Kept only where you can see it

Your last 10 scans are saved in this browser so you can share one again — on this device, nowhere else. Untick Keep my scans on this device and nothing is stored at all; Delete all removes what is there.

    No account, no watermark

No sign-up, no email address, no page limit, no “Scanned with…” footer stamped on your document, and no paid tier that unlocks the feature you actually needed.

To be precise about what does leave your device — because “100% private” is easy to say and worth checking. Three things, none of them your document:

    1. The first time you make a PDF, the text reader (about 4 MB) downloads from this website and is kept by your browser, so later scans don’t fetch it again. It is the same file for everyone; nothing about your pages goes the other way.
    2. When a PDF is finished, this page sends one anonymous message to our counter saying “document-scanner was used”. No photo, no text, no file name, no page count, nothing identifying you.
    3. Google Analytics records the page view and that a scan happened, as on every page of this site — with counts and settings only (how many pages, the look and quality you chose, whether the text could be read), never the contents. You can block it and the scanner works exactly the same.

Your photos, the PDF and the text read from it are in none of these. Turn off your wifi after your first scan, reload this page and scan another bill. It still works. No upload-based scanner can pass that test.

    Questions

    Scanning documents, answered

Are my photos or my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Finding the page, straightening it, the black-and-white clean-up and reading the text all run inside your browser on your own device. Your photos, the PDF and its text are never put in a network request. The simplest proof: after your first scan, turn off your internet, reload the page and scan again — it still works.
Is it as good as Adobe Scan or CamScanner?
For the everyday job — photograph a bill, get a clean PDF, send it — yes, and without an app, an account or a cloud library. Two honest differences: those apps have a live viewfinder that snaps the photo for you, where this uses your phone’s own camera; and their edge detection is better on a white page lying on a white desk, where this one may ask you to drag the corners yourself. Put the page on something darker and it rarely needs help.
    What does “searchable PDF” mean?
The text on each page is read (OCR) and hidden behind the picture of the page, exactly where it appears. The PDF looks the same, but you can search it for a word like “Total”, and select or copy its text in any PDF reader. The reading is English-only and can get a smudged character wrong, so the picture of the page — not the hidden text — is always the record.
Does it work on an iPhone?
Yes, in Safari or Chrome. Scan with camera opens the iPhone camera, HEIC photos from your library work, and Share PDF opens the normal iOS share sheet. To use it like an app, add it to your home screen: it gets its own Scanner icon and opens straight into the scanner.
Will WhatsApp or email accept the PDF?
Yes. A five-page bill in the Photocopy look at the default Small quality is typically under half a megabyte, far below any WhatsApp, Gmail or upload-form limit. If a form demands an exact size such as 200 KB, run the PDF through our Reduce Any File Size tool afterwards.
Where are my recent scans kept, and how do I delete them?
In this browser’s own storage on this device — the same place a website keeps your settings. Nothing is uploaded and no other device can see them. Delete one with its bin button, all of them with Delete all, or untick Keep my scans on this device to stop keeping them. Clearing this site’s data in your browser settings also removes them. Only the newest 10 are kept.
It cropped the wrong part of my photo. How do I fix it?
Tap the page and drag each of the four circles onto a corner of the paper; a magnifier shows exactly where your finger is. Whole photo uses the entire picture, and Find edges tries again. Next time, a darker surface under the page and light from above, rather than behind you, make the edges easy to find.
Do I need to sign up or pay?
No. There is no account, no email capture, no watermark and no paid tier. Nopturnia funds itself through affiliate links on its product buying guides, not through these tools.

    Keep it handy

Put it on your home screen, or tell us what’s missing

    Use it like an app

Add it to your phone’s home screen — it gets its own Scanner icon, opens straight into the scanner, works offline, and has no account behind it. Or bookmark it.

    Something not right?

If a page was cropped wrong, the black-and-white came out too dark or too faint, or the text it read was poor, tell us. The form opens with the tool already filled in, so you only have to describe what happened.
