How We Test
And what we won't pretend to have done

Nopturnia covers a lot of ground — phones, laptops, audio, TVs, appliances, peripherals. No individual honestly owns and long-term tests every product across that many categories, and any site telling you otherwise is stretching the truth.

So here's what we actually do. Where we own and use a product, that first-hand experience drives the ranking and we say so. Everywhere else, our rankings come from structured analysis: specifications compared like-for-like, thousands of verified-purchase reviews mined for the failure patterns that only appear after months of ownership, and a price history we record ourselves, daily.

That combination is deliberately less glamorous than "we tested all 40 in our lab." It's also the truth, and it's reproducible — which matters more.

Hands-on use. Some of the products we recommend are ones we own and live with. Where personal experience shapes a verdict, the write-up reflects it directly rather than paraphrasing a spec sheet.

Verified-owner reviews, at volume. For everything else, we read across thousands of verified-purchase reviews on the marketplaces where the product actually sells. Individual reviews are noisy and often gamed; patterns across thousands are not. A hinge that fails at month eight, a battery that sags after a year, a fan that develops a whine — these show up in aggregate long before they show up in a launch review.

Manufacturer specifications. We compare panels, chipsets, capacities, warranty terms and service-network coverage directly, and we flag where a spec-sheet advantage doesn't translate into a real-world one. Higher numbers are not automatically better numbers.

Our own price record. We snapshot the price of every product in our catalogue once every day and keep the history. That's data we generate ourselves, and it's what the price panel on our product cards draws on.

The exact factors vary by category — noise cancellation matters for headphones and not for fridges — but every guide is built on the same six-part frame, weighted toward daily use rather than benchmark headlines.

Prices in our guides come from the retailer's own product feed — the same figure the link lands on — not from a rival review site or a press release. Where a retailer and a review site disagree, we go with the retailer, because that's what you'll be charged.

We record every catalogue price once a day and keep roughly three months of history. That's what powers the price panel on our product cards: whether today's price is near its low, about typical, or higher than usual. It's also why we can say "lowest in 90 days" and mean something specific by it.

Prices move constantly. We recheck them at every update, but the number on the retailer's page at the moment you click is always the authoritative one.

This is the section most sites leave out, which is exactly why it's here.

We don't run a test lab. No colorimeters, no anechoic chambers, no instrumented battery rigs. Where a guide cites a measurement, it comes from the manufacturer or a credited third party — never presented as ours.

We haven't personally handled every product we list. In a twelve-product roundup, we will not have lived with all twelve. Our ranking method is built to be honest about that rather than to disguise it.

We don't accept payment for placement. No manufacturer has ever paid to appear, to rank higher, or to have criticism removed — and if that ever changes, it will be disclosed on the page, prominently.

We don't use invented review scores. Where you see a rating, it is our own editorial assessment, not an aggregate dressed up as measurement.

It does not influence rankings. We earn the same commission rate whichever product in a guide you buy, so there is no financial reason to prefer one over another — and we regularly rank cheaper products above pricier ones for exactly that reason.

We buy what we own ourselves. We do not accept free review units in exchange for coverage, and no manufacturer sees an article before it publishes.

Every guide carries a visible "Updated" date, and that date is only moved when something substantive changes — a new pick, a re-ranking, a materially different price, or a product going off the market. We don't bump dates to look fresh.

Prices refresh daily via our own tracking. Rankings get revisited when a significant new product lands in the category, or when owner reviews reveal a reliability problem we didn't previously know about.
