Camera boxes shout megapixels and throw around acronyms — IP65, edge AI, PTZ, starlight. Here is what each actually means for keeping your home safe.
Resolution: MP, 2K, 4K and the zoom test
Megapixels (2MP, 3MP, 4MP) describe how much detail the sensor captures; 2K and 4K are marketing shorthands roughly matching 3MP and 8MP. The number that matters is whether you can zoom into recorded footage and still read something useful — a face, a number plate. 2MP shows “a person was here”; 3MP identifies them up close; 4K lets you crop into a wide outdoor scene after the fact. But higher resolution multiplies storage use, so it is a balance, not a race.
Night vision: IR versus full colour
Cheaper cameras use infrared (IR) LEDs to see in the dark — effective, but the image is black-and-white, so you lose the colour of clothing or a vehicle. Full-colour night vision uses either a built-in spotlight or a highly sensitive starlight sensor to keep colour after dark. For identifying a person or car at night — the whole point outdoors — colour night vision is a real, worthwhile upgrade.
Edge AI, PTZ and IP ratings
Edge AI means the camera’s own chip analyses the video locally to distinguish a human from an animal or moving branch, so you only get meaningful alerts (and it works even if the internet drops). PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) is the motor that lets a camera sweep 360° and follow movement. IP ratings grade dust and water resistance: IP65 handles rain and jets, IP67 adds temporary submersion — anything outdoors needs at least IP65 to survive an Indian monsoon.
Storage, cloud and the privacy question
Footage lives in one of three places. A microSD card in the camera or a DVR/NVR hard drive keeps everything local — free, private, but lost if the device is stolen. The cloud backs up off-site (safe from theft) but may cost a subscription and, critically, sits on the brand’s servers — which is why data location matters. Qubo hosting in India, and eufy’s local-first design, are direct answers to the worry about home footage sitting on a foreign server. Decide your storage and privacy stance before the resolution.
